THE JEWISH STATE May 28, 2010 BERNSTEIN. Mr. Bernard "Bernie" Bernstein died May 24, 2010. He was 73. Born and raised in New York City, Bernie lived in North Plainfield before moving to Martinsville in 1999. He was founder and owner of Mid-State Lumber Company in Branchburg since 1975. He was a member of Temple Sholom in Bridgewater, Raritan Valley Country Club, 200 Club, Somerville Elks Lodge, and the Masonic Lodge in Plainfield. He was former president of the Plainfield Hebrew School and served on the board at the Plainfield JCC. His greatest passion in life was working with his sons at the family business. He enjoyed golfing and tennis in his spare time. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather, and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Mr. Bernstein is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Linda; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth, Gary and Dawn, and David and Bonnie; brother, Irwin; sister, Eleanor Rosenfeld; and grandchildren, Jessica, Marissa, Samantha, Ross, Adam, Danielle, and Jacob. Bridge St., Bridgewater, N.J. 08807. COHEN. Mr. Irving Cohen died May 21, 2010. He was 82. Born in Weehawken, Mr. Cohen lived most of his life in North Bergen and Teaneck. He was a member of Congregation Beth Sholom, Teaneck, for more than 45 years. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from New York University, Washington Square College, in 1953. Prior to retiring in 1992, he owned Benmeyer's Dry Goods, Union City, for more than 35 years. After retirement, he continued his lifelong passion for fly fishing, protecting the environment, and photography. Irving is survived by his wife of 54 years, Harriet (nee Neustein) Cohen; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Dot of North Brunswick; daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Mike Kamrass of Knoxville, Tenn., Susan and Carl Alderson of Atlantic Highlands, and Naomi and Andy Jackenthal Kendall Park; sisters, Rita Schwartz and June Waxman, both of Pompano Beach, Fla.; and six grandchildren. Born in Jersey City, Mr. Deitch lived in West Long Branch for the past 35 years. He was a retired stockbroker for Prudential, and a member of Temple Beth Torah, Ocean. He was a member of the JCC in Deal, and was a trustee there for many years. Mr. Deitch is survived by his wife, Tanis; daughters and sons-in-law, Jill Deitch and Joseph Perone of Scotch Plains, and Jennifer and Mauricio Lavie of Livingston; brother, Joel of New York; and grandchildren, Jacob, Max, and Sam Perone, and Ethan Lavie. Born in Englewood, Mrs. Fishman was raised in River Edge, and lived in Bergen, Middlesex, and Monmouth counties before settling in Ocean County. She attended Grahm Junior College in Boston, worked in retail, and held various positions in which she cared for animals, as she was always an animal lover. She was predeceased by her loving parents, Charles and Lillian Berenson. Mrs. Fishman is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl J. and Joe Shuberda of North Las Vegas, Nev.; and twin grandchildren, Tristen and Lynne Berenson of Howell. Born in Jersey City, Lillian grew up in Brooklyn (Bensonhurst), moved to Lakewood after her marriage to her beloved Joseph in 1943, and lived here for 20 years. She was an active member of Temple Beth Am. She attended New York University and received a bachelor's degree in education. She was a teacher in the Morris County city schools and retired 42 years ago. She loved to travel, and enjoyed the theater, ballet, and the fine arts. Foremost, she loved and enjoyed her family. She was predeceased by her dear husband, Joseph, and her daughter, Judith Marrisa. Mrs. Franklin is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Robin Sue and Daniel Nosenchuck of Newtown, Pa.; sons and daughters-in-law, Barry and Emily of Toms River, Donald of Lake Park, Fla., and Jan of Jackson; grandchildren, Heather, Joshua, Julianna, Andrew, Natalie, Sidney, LeeAnna, Max, Havila, Abigail, and Robert; and great-grandchildren, Ava Madison, Elizabeth Rose, and Robert Jan. Mr. Harry Glass died May 21, 2010, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 82. Born in Newark, Mr. Glass lived in Edison before moving to Monroe 15 years ago. Prior to retiring in 1997, he was the controller for Peter Pan Industries in Newark, where he worked for 40 years. Mr. Glass is survived by his wife of 54 years, Francine (Feigenbaum); daughter and son-in-law, Audrey and Joel Napchen of Edison; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Sheera, of Hoboken, and David and Lisa of Springfield; and grandchildren, Lindsay, Mathew, Samantha, Carolyn, and Jonah. Horowitz died May 17, 2010. She was 84. Born and raised in Newark, Harriet lived in Parsippany and Deptford before moving to South Brunswick in 2005. She was employed as a bookkeeper for many years in the Morris County area. Harriet was a life member of Hadassah and The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and was active with O.R.T. She brought much happiness and was loved by so many. Her husband, Alex, died in 1993. Harried is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Helene of Hillsborough and Dean and Alexa; and grandchildren, Bryce and Anneliese of Barrington, Ill. Interment at the BG William C. He was 92. Born in Russia, Mr. Manover lived in Queens before moving to Monroe 14 years ago. He graduated from New York University in 1941, receiving a B.A. in accounting. He owned and operated Graham Hardware Store in Brooklyn for 40 years with his partner and brother-in-law, Jack Gross. He retired in 1986. Norman was an avid handball and paddleball player. He loved to read books and the Daily News and did the jumble word game every day. He enjoyed going to Atlantic City and loved to play competitive card games with his wife Shirley. He was gentle, kind, intelligent, easy-going, and a good listener. He was a great role model for his family and friends. He always had a warm dimpled smile and a twinkle in his eye. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Mr. Manover is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Phyllis; daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Ethan Glickman; grandchildren, Adam Manover, Beth and her husband Marco Mercaldo, Jason Glickman and his wife Allison, Russell Glickman and his wife Megan, and Douglas Glickman; and great-grandchildren, Ava and Jason Mercaldo, Joseph and Charles Glickman, and Madison Glickman. Born in New Brunswick, Pat lived with his family in Branchburg. He graduated in 2006 from Somerville High School. He was a member of the Somerville basketball, baseball, and soccer teams. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in communications at Fordham University in New York City and interned at CBS Entertainment and Comedy Central in Manhattan. He was a devoted son, brother, grandson, and nephew and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Pat is survived by his loving parents, Rich and Lesli; brothers, TJ and Chris; paternal grandparents, Honey and Stan Rubin; maternal grandmother, Blanche Emerson; and aunt, Mindy Emerson. She was 103. Born in Plainfield, Mary spent most of her life there before moving to West Hartford, Conn., in 1994. She was the widow of Samuel H. Schwartz, M.D., and daughter of the late Lillian and Harry Edelman. Her life spanned almost the entire 20th century, and the milestones of that century became milestones in her own life. She recalled the novelty of rushing to the window as a child to watch a plane flying by. A graduate of Plainfield High School and the Newark Normal School, she also attended Rutgers University. She began her career in 1927 teaching elementary school in South Plainfield. She taught school for eight years before becoming a full-time homemaker and returned to teaching during World War II while her husband was serving with the Army. After she was widowed in 1960, she taught for another 13 years in Plainfield, first at the Clinton School and then at the Cedarbrook School. She belonged to the N.J. Education Association and the National Education Association. Mary was an active member and on the board of directors of the Plainfield Jewish Community Center, where she was chairman of youth activities for many years. She was active in the Plainfield Chapter of the American Red Cross and received a certificate of recognition for her services as a USO volunteer. She also served as a member of the Jewish Welfare Board. A lifelong member of Temple Sholom in Plainfield, she maintained her affiliations there even after moving to West Hartford and in recent years held the honor of being the congregation's oldest member. She met her husband there, where they both taught Sunday school. Known as an avid reader, Mary read several books weekly throughout her life. She also loved collecting antiques. The family is appreciative of the devoted assistance Mary had from her wonderful caregivers in recent years. Mary is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret (Peggy) and Dr. Ruben Shapiro of Bloomfield, Conn.; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Gordon and Rochelle Schwartz of Philadelphia; grandchildren, Susan Schwartz, Amory Schwartz and his wife, Kate Clarke Schwartz, Steven Shapiro and his wife Meg Slavin, Dr. Roger Shapiro and his wife, Dr. Shahin Lockman, and David Shapiro and his wife Julianne Woo; and nine great-grandchildren.
