HOCHBERG. Mrs. Hana Hochberg died May 11, 2010, at Emeritus at Boynton Beach, Fla. She was 88.

Born in New York City, Mrs. Hochberg was raised in Red Bank and had lived in Freehold and Florida. She was a member of Congregation Agudath Achim in Freehold, Congregation Sons of Israel in Englishtown, Freehold Hadassah, and the Sisterhood of Congregation Agudath Achim. Her husband, Arthur, died in 1985; her son, Tedd, died in 1996.

Mrs. Hochberg is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bernard and Ruth; daughter and son-in-law, Eileen Hochberg and Paul Siracusa; and granddaughter, Amy Dara Hochberg. Interment at Congregation Sons of Israel Cemetery, Englishtown. Memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, P.O. LAVINE. Mrs. Sylvia Lavine died May 14, 2010, at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. She was 86.

Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Lavine lived in the shore area for 70 years. She retired in 1975 from Fort Monmouth where she had been a supply department worker. She was a former member of B'nai B'rith Women and Temple Beth Miriam in Elberon. Her husband, Talbert, died in 2006. She was also predeceased by her twin brother, Abraham Gerechoff.

Mrs. Lavine is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Mary Klawetter; grandchildren, Jason, Aaron, and Rebecca Waters; great-grandchildren, Finnuala Klawetter, and Kayla and Benjamin Waters. Arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean.

LERNER. Mr. Samuel "Sam" Lerner died May 13, 2010, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. He was 84. He was predeceased by his brother, Bernard "Barney" Lerner, and his sister, Dorothy Gottleib.

Born in Jersey City, Sam attended Snyder High School and upon graduation, immediately enlisted in the Marine Corps. He saw combat during World War II, with the 1st Marine Division, making the initial landing on Okinawa. When the war was over, he was stationed in Tientsin, China. He owned and operated Apollo Construction Company for more than 45 years, which specialized in commercial and industrial construction. He was an avid sportsman and played football for the Jersey City Vikings. He was a staunch believer in physical fitness and worked out at the gym almost daily. He was a runner and when he could no longer run, he became a walker, most often walking the boardwalk between Asbury Park and Belmar. He was a big part of his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's lives and was a great inspiration to them. His love and support will remain with them forever. Sam was a member of Temple Beth El and the Jewish War Veterans, Grover Post. He will be greatly missed by his family, his extended family and his many friends.

Mr. Lerner is survived by his cherished wife of 62 years, Adele Lerner (nee Glazer); daughters and son-in-law, Randee and Harold Cassidy, Jill Saunders, and Misti Lerner; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Kent and Melanie Lerner; grandchildren, Brett Cassidy and his wife Sally, Brooke Cassidy, David Cassidy and his wife Julie, Derek Cassidy, Sethe Block, Danielle, Alexandra, Andrew, David Chase, and Shea Lerner; and great-grandchildren, Cade, Claudia, Tristan, and Chloe Cassidy, and two more expected in June. Interment at Temple Beth El Cemetery, Neptune. Arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Funeral Chapel.

ROSEN. Mr. Sidney Rosen died May 8, 2010, at JFK Medical Center, Edison. He was 82.

Born in Plainfield to William and Eva Mann Rosen, Mr. Rosen was raised in South River by his dad and step-mom, Sylvia. A graduate of South River High School, he attended Rutgers University before serving in the Army 1946-1948. Upon discharge, he resumed working alongside his father in the family business. Called back into the military during the Korean conflict, he served in the Air Force 1950-1952, then began a 39-year career as an appliance sales person and manager with Sears, Roebuck & Co. He was active in many community organizations including Knights of Pythias, Cystic Fibrosis, the Deborah Heart and Lung Hospital, Boy Scouts of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Jewish Wars Veterans. His last volunteer assignment was as an aide in Mrs. Schaefer's first grade class at Edison's John Marshall Elementary School. Much loved by the students, he read to them twice a week until his illness forced him to retire once again. He was predeceased by his brother, Marvin.

Mr. Rosen is survived by his wife of 37 years, Elaine; sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen, Michael and Joan, Ronald Schmalzigan, and Robert and Anne Schmalzigan; daughter and son-in-law, Eva and Bill Cain; grandchildren, Michael and Thomas Cain, Jonathan and Miranda Rosen, and Robert Schmalzigan Jr.; brothers, Israel of Mercer Island, Wash., and A. Marshall of Newbury Park, Calif. Interment at Samptown Cemetery (B'rith Abraham B'nai Zion), South Plainfield. Arrangements by The Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Inc., Edison. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity or religious organization.

SAMUELS. Mrs. Shirley (nee Birkenfeld) Samuels died May 15, 2010, at Foothill Acres Nursing Home, Hillsborough. She was 86.

Born in Newark to Yetta and Nathan Birkenfeld, Shirley lived there until she and her beloved husband, Ervin, moved the family to Union in 1951. She worked along side Ervin at the family businesses, Samuels, Inc. and later Buy Wise Auto Parts in Vauxhall. Her best work was being the greatest mom, grandma, and great-grandma ever. She was a member of the Piscataway chapter of Women's American ORT, Sara Slifer Chapter of Union, and the Women's Club of Somerset Run. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ervin, and her loving sister, Eleanor Steinlauf.

Mrs. Samuels is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judi and Bernie Marx of Somerset; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Vivian of Green Brook; grandchildren, Jennifer and Matthew Ward, Joshua and Marcy Marx, Kelly and Brian Ford, and Ryan Samuels and his fiancee Mary Ann Giaimo; and great-grandchildren, Allison, Sydney, and Jacob Ward, and Charlie Ford. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's or a charity of one's choice.

SPECK. Mr. Norton L. Speck died May 12, 2010. He was 85.

Born in New York City, Mr. Speck lived in Edison for 53 years. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a chemical engineer and owned MERN Manufacturing Inc. He was a member of the Y Squares Square Dance Club. He was predeceased by his brother, Paul, and Paul's wife, Eleanore.

Mr. Speck is survived by his wife, Florence Russman Speck; daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Kevin VanMalden of Montvale; sons and daughters-in-law, Marc and Connie, of Temecula, Calif., and Adam and Kerri, of Clinton; and grandchildren, Emily and Julie VanMalden, Rebecca and Matthew Speck, and Sarah, Abby, and Jonathan Speck.
