BERKOW. Dr. Lester H. Berkow died May 8, 2010, after a heroic fight against pancreatic cancer. He was 74.

Son of the late Dr. Samuel and Mrs. Elizabeth Berkow of Perth Amboy, Dr. Berkow graduated from New York University and continued on at New York Medical College. Following medical school he interned at Newark Beth Israel Hospital. He served as a decorated Army captain stationed at Fort Holabird in Baltimore, and became an OB/GYN resident at Mount Sinai Hospital. He joined a practice founded by his late father and remained in the private practice for more than 20 years. He followed in his father's footsteps as the chief of staff and head of OB/GYN at Raritan Bay Medical Center for more than 15 years. Retired in 1991, Lester relocated to Boca Raton, Fla., where he was an avid bird watcher, koi keeper, and orchid grower. He was predeceased by his brother, Gordon.

Dr. Berkow is survived by his loving wife of 49-plus years, Rhoda; sister, Irene Hutt; children and their spouses, Sam and Toby Berkow of Los Angeles, Calif., and Joanne and Todd Schwartz of Scotch Plains; and grandchildren, Andrew, Elizabeth, and Kayden. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by The Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Inc., Edison. BRONFMAN. Mr. Barry Bronfman died May 8, 2010 at Care One at Morris in Parsippany. He was 66.

Born in New Brunswick, Barry lived in Parsippany for many years. He owned and operated American Trailer, Inc. in Edison, and retired about 20 years ago. He was predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Ethel; and his first wife, Marcia.

Mr. Bronfman is survived by his wife, Linda (nee Bloom); four children; and a brother, Louis. Interment at Poile Zedek Cemetery, New Brunswick. Arrangements by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick.

GOLDSTEIN. Mr. Karl Goldstein died May 3, 2010. He was 92.

The son of Abraham and Rebecca Goldstein, Mr. Goldstein was born in Brooklyn, raised in New Brunswick, and graduated from New Brunswick High School. He served in the Army during World War II and was discharged as a staff sergeant. The founder/owner of K-C Iron and Metal Co. and K-C Auto Parts in New Brunswick, he also lived in Edison and in Monroe. He was pre-deceased by his grandson, Scott A. Rosenthal, and by his brother, Martin.

Mr. Goldstein is survived by his wife, Miriam Ernest Goldstein; daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis B. and Larry Rosenthal of West Palm Beach, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law and David L. Goldstein and Debbie Engel of New York City; grandchildren, Greg Rosenthal and Rebecca Goldstein; and sister, Vivian Shilling. Interment at Washington Cemetery, Monmouth Jct. KETZENBERG. Mrs. Denise Ketzenberg (nee Silver) died May 2, 2010 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She was 62.

Born in Germiston, South Africa, Mrs. Ketzenberg resided in Westfield before moving to Red Bank 12 years ago. A loving wife and mother, she was also a member of the National Bridge Association.

Mrs. Ketzenberg is survived by her dearly beloved husband Evan; devoted sons, Howard of South Africa, Warren of Red Bank, and Terry of West Hollywood, Calif.; daughter-in-law Cara Segall; dear mother Sarah Silver of South Africa; cherished sisters Maureen Sadler of South Africa, Jeanette Rothchild of Red Bank, and Melanie Tarica of Westfield; and her adored grandchildren, Aiden and Ella. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

PASZAMANT. Mrs. Vivian Klempert Paszamant died May 8, 2010 at home. She was 80.

Born in Trenton, Vivian lived in New Brunswick for 45 years before moving to New York City in 1975. A college graduate, she was a social worker for the City of New York and was their Yiddish specialist for many years. She was an actress and a founding member of the "Plays in the Park at Roosevelt Park" in Edison. She also had a radio program on the local New Brunswick station many years ago, as well as writing a newspaper column on acting for the Home News Tribune. She owned the 18th Street Playhouse, an off-off Broadway theater in New York City, along with three rehearsal halls. She was predeceased by her parents, Samuel and Doris Klempert; brother, Dr. Milton Klempert; and her son, Marc Paszamant.

Mrs. Paszamant is survived by her daughter, Sherry Paszamant-Freedman and her partner Dianne Lior; and grandchildren, Jonathan D. Freedman and Dr. Alison Freedman.

RAND. Mr. Herbert Rand died May 4, 2010, at home. He was 102.

Born in New York City, Mr. Rand moved to Highland Park in 1973 and had been a resident of Somerset since 2005. He was an attorney who received his doctorate in jurisprudence and was admitted to the New York Bar in 1931. He began his practice with the firm of Kaye and Scholer, then became one of the founders of the law firm, Kane and Kessler. During the middle years of practice, he acted as arbitrator and decided cases under the auspices of the American Arbitrators Association. He was the author of numerous articles on gift and estate taxes published in various tax periodicals and law journals. He also published articles on the Bible and archaeology that appeared in the Jewish Bible Quarterly, the Israel Exploration Journal, Midstream, and Judaism magazines. He wrote the book, "Who's in charge Here?" a collection of his writings published by the Conservatory of Letters. In his later years, he specialized in maritime law and international marine insurance coverage. After retiring in 1987, he taught English as a second Language for six years for the Literacy Volunteers of America. More recently, he taught a course on the Hebrew Bible at Rutgers University Academy of Lifelong Learning. He was a member of many professional and social organizations over his lifetime and was a member of the Highland Park Conservative Temple-Congregation Anshe Emeth.

Mr. Rand is survived by his beloved wife, Pearl (nee Feingold); daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Kenneth Daniels of Edison; son, Robert of New York City; adored grandchildren, Lori Chasan and her husband Sam of Bergenfield, Steven Daniels of Rotterdam, N.Y., Noah Rand of Brooklyn, and Hannah Rand of New York City; and great-grandchildren, Aliza, Rivka, and Akiva Chasan. Interment at Riverside Cemetery, Lodi. Arrangements by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick. SIMON. Mrs. Gertrude Simon (nee Lubetkin) died May 4, 2010 at Loomis House, Holyoke, Mass. She was 98.

Born in the Bronx, Mrs. Simon lived in Dover and Linden before moving to Massachusetts in 1998. She was a secretary for Eagle Pitcher, Dover, before becoming executive secretary for Warner Lambert in Morris Plains, for 13, years, retiring in 1965. A member of Jewish Women International, and the Sisterhood of Mekor Chayim of Linden, she was a life member of Hadassah. She attended Drake College in Newark. Her main concern was for others. She was predeceased by her husbands, George Passmonick, esq. and David Simon; her son, Edward Simon, Ph.D.; her brothers, Herman and Leon Lubetkin; and her sister, Lillian Lawrence.

Mrs. Simon is survived by her daughters, Rona Joy Kleinman of Linden, Marcia Sue Shorr of Atlanta, and Harriet Leibowitz of Mt. Kisco, N.Y.; brother, Robert Leeds of Florida; sister, Sylvia Flartey of Mine Hill; 11 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.

ZALESKIN. Mr. Paul Zaleskin died April 24, 2010 at Care One, East Brunswick. He was 82.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Zaleskin lived in East Brunswick before moving to Monroe 16 years ago. Prior to retiring in 1995, he was a salesman for Sterns Department Store, Woodbridge, where he worked for more than 20 years. He was a congregant of the East Brunswick Jewish Center and a member of the Greenbriar Senior Social Club and the Greenbriar Bowling Club.

Mr. Zaleskin is survived by his wife of 17 years, Marlene Saltzman Zaleskin; daughters and sons-in-law, Michele and Drew Winans of Long Branch, and Hilary and David Leitner of Freehold; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Stephanie of Texas; stepsons and their wives, Carey and Leslie Fox of Connecticut, and Richard and Jeanie Fox of South River; sisters, Sophie Folek of Maryland and Gertrude Hammer of Boca Raton, Fla.; and grandchildren, Samantha and Hannah Leitner, and Adam, Emily, Max, and Spencer Fox. Interment at the United Hebrew Cemetery, Staten Island. Arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick.
