THE JEWISH STATE June 4, 2010 BENJAMIN. Ms. Jane S. Benjamin died May 30, 2010, at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston. She was 72. Born in Newark, Jane lived in South Orange and Maplewood before moving to Roseland many years ago. She attended Simmons College and graduated from Upsala College. She worked for The New Jersey Law Journal/Lawyer's Diary for many years, retiring in 2000. She was a lifetime board member of Women's Philanthropy of the United Jewish Communities of Metro West, served in many different positions of the Women's Division UJA campaign, was a winner of The Julius and Bessie Cohn Young Leadership Award, was a member of the Board of Jespy House, and was a longtime member of Mountain Ridge Country Club, where she served on the board of governors. Jane will be especially missed by her longtime companion, Frank Goodman. For more than 30 years they were travel partners, enjoying a worldwide adventure that included all seven continents. When not traveling, they enjoyed the arts, theater, opera, museums, tennis, golf, friends, and family. A grandmother and dear friend, Jane will be missed by the entire extended Goodman family. She had the uncanny ability to connect with the many people that she came in contact with during her lifetime. She was considered a "best friend" by so many. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Benjamin. Jane is survived by her children, Peter Benjamin and Dr. Kate Callahan of Coconut Grove, Fla., and James and Jeanne Benjamin of Atlanta, Ga.; and grandchildren, Jake, Samantha, and Jason. Mr. Nathan Greenberg died May 30, 2010 at home. He was 88. Born in New Brunswick, Mr. Greenberg had lived in Highland Park for many years before moving to North Brunswick in 1984. He, along with his brother-in-law, was the proprietor of Columbo's Wine and Liquors, Cliffside Park, for more than 15 years. He later became a wholesale representative for E & D Mill Supply Co. of Perth Amboy until his retirement. He was a soft-spoken individual who was an avid reader, particularly of anything history related. He served with the Army during World War II. He was very family oriented. He also collected stamps. He was predeceased by his three sisters. Mr. Greenberg is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Shirley (Goldberg); son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Daralyn of North Brunswick; daughter, Elyse Greenberg of North Brunswick; and grandchildren, Jake and Hayley. Interment at Poile Zedek Cemetery, New Brunswick. Arrangements by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick. KUCHINSKY. Mrs. Gloria D. (nee Herman) Kuchinsky died May 25, 2010, at home. She was 87. Born in New Pelham, N.Y., Mrs. Kuchinsky grew up in Newark and Hillside. She also had lived in Plainfield and Scotch Plains before moving to Monroe more than 10 years ago. She had worked as a bookkeeper for her husband for a number of years before becoming a public accountant. She retired in 1987. A discerning and caring woman, she was very active in her children's formative years as a PTA member, school class mother, and class monitor. She was very active in Temple Beth El, Plainfield, and with Hadassah. Besides enjoying the great outdoors through camping, hiking, traveling, and swimming, she enjoyed singing, the theater, and going to concerts. With her late husband, David, she had for many years led many members of the Amateur Astronomers Society on trips to view lunar and solar eclipse sightings all over the world. Her beloved husband of 64 years, David, died in 2008. Mrs. Kuchinsky is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Joy of Highland Park; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Merv Dickinson of Franklin Park, and Ellen and Bruce Varnum of Alpharetta, Ga.; sister and brother-in-law, Audrey and Al Silverstein of Boynton Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. MELNICK. Mr. Robert J. Melnick died May 30, 2010, at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. He was 75. Born in Brooklyn, Robert lived in Woodbridge for many years, then Basking Ridge for 10 years before moving to Pelham Manor, N.Y. He was the senior vice president and general manager of Lockheed Electronics Corporation, Plainfield, for 40 years. He was a member of Congregation Adath Israel, Woodbridge, and of the Copper Hill Country Club, Flemington. His wife, Helen, died in 2009. Robert is survived by his sons, Eric of Pelham Manor, N.Y., and David of Katonah, N.Y.; brother, Arthur of California; and grandchildren, Justin, Alexa, Nicole, and Zachary. Dr. Charles Reich, Ph.D., died peacefully May 26, 2010, at St. Peter's University Hospital of multiple myeloma, which he bravely fought and contained for eight years, and liver disease, a complication of the illness. He was 63. Dr. Reich was born in Rehau, Germany, in a displacement camp, to Shanka Rosenbluth Reich and Leon Reich. The family moved to the U.S., settling in Roselle and Elizabeth, and later, Brooklyn. He lived in the New Brunswick area, Berkeley, Calif., and Washington, D.C., before settling in Highland Park for the last 30 years. He obtained his BS in chemistry from Brooklyn College, a Ph.D. from Rutgers University in physical chemistry, and completed his post-doctoral work at the University of California at Berkeley in the department of chemistry. He was a lecturer at Rutgers University in the department of chemistry for two years. He then worked at the EPA in Washington, D.C. before joining Colgate Palmolive in 1981. He retired in June 2009 from the Technology Center in Piscataway. At the time of his retirement, he was the director of technology, heading the advanced technology hair care group. Dr. Reich developed technologies to improve the delivery of active ingredients and used one of these to develop conditioning shampoos. The original shampoo has been Colgate's most successful. That shampoo, known as the CR formula, and its various versions, is sold around the world. He developed key patented technology that was employed to produce these high performance premium shampoos. Research honors include "You Can Make a Difference" awards three times at Colgate, the Society of Cosmetic Chemists Award for best published papers twice, and several other outstanding honors. During his career, he produced more than 30 publications, patents, and book chapters. He was a longtime member of Congregation Ohav Emeth of Highland Park, a longtime board member of the Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County, and a member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, the Sierra Club, and the National Historic Preservation Society. He was a deeply religious and spiritual man with a broad range of interests, including politics, travel, outdoor activities, and the preservation of historic structures. He especially treasured every moment of togetherness with his son, Joey. He was predeceased by his parents and his twin sister, Bella. The family and close friends would like to extend our great appreciation to the extremely dedicated and caring doctors, nurses, aides, and housekeeping staff at St. Peter's and at Willow Creek Rehabilitation Center. Dr. Reich is survived by his wife of 16 years, Marilyn Blacher-Reich; his beloved 12-year-old son, Joseph Leon; sister and brother-in-law, Claire and Paul Wachtel; niece, Rachel; mother-in-law, Beatrice Blacher; sister-in-law, Natalie Blacher; brother-in-law, Dr. Christopher Warren; and nephew, Cameron. Ms. Gladys Zimmerman died May 27, 2010, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. She was 90. Born and raised in New Brunswick, Gladys lived for many years in North Brunswick. She graduated from New Brunswick High School and attended New Jersey College for Women, now known as Douglass College-Rutgers, having taken courses in art. She was a wonderful artist. She worked for many years with Johnson and Johnson as a purchasing agent and retired in 1976. Her sister, Tessie, died in 2005. Gladys is survived by her cousins, including Phyllis Chudnick and family, Janet Robinson and family, and Roberta Yafie. Interment at Poile Zedek Cemetery, New Brunswick.
