THE JEWISH STATE June 25, 2010 GRUHIN. Mr. Garson I. Gruhin died June 15, 2010. He was 89. Born in Jersey City, Garson lived most of his life in Carteret, where he and his brother, Max, owned Gruhin's Pharmacy, serving the community for 60 years. Garson graduated from Rutgers Pharmacy School at 19 and, as a pharmacist, served in World War II in the Pacific arena. He was a board member of the Congregation of Loving Justice and the JCC of Carteret. He was a kind and charitable man, always reaching out to those less fortunate than he. Yiddishkeit was at the center of his being. His great generosity of spirit will be deeply missed. Mr. Gruhin is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Sylvia; children, Ruth, Mark, and Lee; daughters-in-law, Susan and Deirdre; and grandchildren, Alex, Andrew, Samantha, Daniel, and Jack. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Vauxhall. KATZ. Mr. Harold Katz died June 16, 2010 at the Elmora Hills Nursing Home in Elizabeth. He was 92. Born and raised in Newark, Mr. Katz lived in Hillside, then Cranford, 1966-1994 before moving to Elizabeth in 1997. He began his career in the scrap metal business in the horse and carriage days. An early pioneer, he became the owner of New Point Wreckers, Elizabeth, in the early 1950s, then the New Point Scrap Metal Company in 1955 and finally the New Point General Scrap Metal Corporation in 1976, a worldwide business, before retiring in 1987. His son, Joel Katz, succeeded him. Mr. Katz was a member of the Knights of Pythias, B'nai B'rith, the Clark Elks, and a longtime member of Temple Beth El Mekor Chayim of Cranford. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Corps of Engineers and Medical Corps. His wife, Mildred (nee Schlarick), died in 1994. Mr. Katz is survived by his sons, Joel of New Port Richey, Fla., and Stewart of Oakdale, N.Y.; daughter, Sherri Webb of North Brunswick; and granddaughter, Chrystal Webb. Mrs. Miriam Kleiner died, June 13, 2010, at Saint Barnabas Hospice at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. She was 83. Born in Irvington, Mrs. Kleiner lived in Cranford for more than 40 years before moving to Long Branch 19 years ago, and then to Tinton Falls for six years. During World War II she worked for the Office of Dependency Benefits as a payroll clerk for the Army. She was also involved in the family restaurant business, Kleiner's Coffee House, in downtown Newark. She was a member of the Ruth Estrin Goldberg Memorial for Cancer Research. Mrs. Kleiner is survived by her husband of 61 years, Nat; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Mark Pidgeon of Interlaken, and Diane Nord and Peter Vega of New York City; and granddaughter and her husband, Sarah and John Ritter of Matawan. Interment at Beth David Cemetery, Kenilworth. Arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean. LEVY. Mrs. Lois K. Levy died following a brief illness on June 12, 2010. She was 80. Lois, who grew up in New York City, spent most of her adult life at the place she loved most, the Jersey Shore, where she raised her family and devoted herself to its communities. The daughter of Donald Klopfer, co-founder of Random House, Lois was keenly interested in the arts, especially dance, which she studied at Bennington College, literature, and the theater. She was a life-long fan of tennis and won many club titles at Ocean Beach Club, where she summered her entire life. She was also a member of Hollywood Golf Club. She was a great friend of the Jewish Community Center in Deal, and of Jewish Family and Children's Services. She was also deeply committed to CPC Behavioral Healthcare, which she helped to create, and served on the board of trustees for more than 42 years. She was president of the board 1976-81 and served as a trustee of the CPC Foundation. Her efforts helped the agency to grow and change people's understanding of mental health. Her deep respect for the CPC staff culminated this year with the Lois K. Levy Staff Award, which is given to staff members each year in her name. She will be remembered for her devotion to her daughters and their families, and for her many friendships. Lois is survived by her daughters, Diane Baxter and Nancy Lobell, and their husbands Robert and Marc; grandchildren, Andrew Baxter and Marshall and Marian Lobell; and step-brother, Tony Wimpfheimer. Memorial donations may be made to the CPC Foundation, 10 Industrial Way East, Eatontown, N.J. 07724. MORRISON. Mr. Donald Morrison died June 16, 2010 at St. Barnabas Hospital, Livingston. He was 90. Born in Alpena, Mich., Mr. Morrison lived in Metuchen for 55 years. He was a lieutenant in the Army, serving in World War II. He was a former member of Temple Neve Shalom and was an avid golfer. He was a chemist for Asarco in Plainfield for 35 years, retiring in 1982. Mr. Morrison is survived by his wife of 62 years, Eleanor (nee Baron); daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Kenneth James of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.; son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Paula of Hercules, Calif.; brothers, Malcolm of Glennie, Mich., and Henry of Cheboygan, Mich.; and grandchildren, Justin Morrison and Lindsay James. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, Metuchen. SCHLISSEL. Mr. Aaron L. Schlissel died June 16, 2010, at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge. He was 75. Born on Long Island, Mr. Schlissel lived in Brooklyn before moving to Old Bridge 42 years ago. Prior to retiring in 1996, he was a pharmaceutical salesman in New Jersey for Dow Chemical of Midland, Mich., for many years. He expressed his passion for helping others by serving his community as chair of the board of education, and then president of Temple Beth Ohr, both in Old Bridge. He was captain of the Old Bridge Rescue Squad and volunteer chief of Middlesex County Office of Emergency Management. After retirement, he volunteered at Old Bridge Regional Hospital for 12 years. Mr. Schlissel is Survived by his wife of 53 years, Lenore; daughters and sons-in-law, Anne and Thomas Schrettner of Fairfax, Va., and Eileen and Richard Edgar of Simi Valley, Calif.; sons and daughter-in-law, Mark and Monica of Moraga, Calif., and Alan of Honolulu; and nine grandchildren. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick. TAUB. Mr. Arthur Lawrence Taub. He was 84. Born to Raphael and Sylvia (nee Spilberg) Taub in Newark, Mr. Taub graduated from West Side High School in Newark and entered Montclair State Teachers College and Syracuse University where he graduated in 1948 with a B.S. in biology after serving honorably in the Army Headquarters I Corps provisional government Tokyo. Arthur entered Rutgers College of Pharmacy in Newark, where he met and married Ann Janet Zar of New Brunswick, daughter of Lenore and Joseph Zar. After graduation and working separately as community pharmacists, Ann and Arthur opened and operated Taub Pharmacy in East Brunswick for 20 years. Arthur served as president of the Middlesex County Pharmaceutical Society. He also served on the board of trustees for the N.J. Pharmaceutical Association, becoming its director of membership services for 20 years. He continued to serve the community, pharmacy, and his alma mater as a member of the board of trustees at Rutgers. He was appointed chairman of the College of Pharmacy Trustee Advisory Committee, inducted into the Rutgers Phonathon Hall of Fame, served as the chairman of the 38th Annual Rutgers Pharmacy Conference, and became the College of Pharmacy Alumnus of the Year. After serving as a trustee for 12 years, Arthur was bestowed Trustee Emeritus Honor for which he served proudly until his passing. Arthur is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann J. Zar; daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia Taub Ames and Steven Alan Ames of New York City; sons and daughters-in-law, Rabbi Joshua S. Taub and Debra Edelman Taub of Beaumont, Texas, and Arden J. Taub and Amy Fleischner Taub of Tenafly; granddaughters, Maxine Rachel Ames, Naomi Sarah Taub, Stephanie Lauren Taub, Marlee Rose Taub, and Olivia Jordan Taub; brother-in-law, Alan Nathan Zar; and nieces, Jennifer Elizabeth Zar and Suzanne Patricia Zar.
