CHAIKEN. Mrs. Helen Sarah Chaiken (nee Miller) died June 25, 2010, in Florida.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Chaiken lived in Belleville from the late 1930s until 1962, when the family moved to Colonia. In 1974, she and her husband moved to Lantana, Fla., and later to Lake Worth, Fla. After graduation from high school, she was a bookkeeper for the Clinton Milk Company in Newark. During World War II, she ran the family newspaper delivery service while her husband worked in the shipyards. When her children were grown, she was a bookkeeper for her brother's accounting firm. While in Belleville, she was an active member of Congregation Ahavath Achim and their Sisterhood. She was also a member of Hadassah in New Jersey and Florida. Her husband, Lazzar (Lou), died in 2009.

Mrs. Chaiken is survived by her daughters, Judi Granick of Las Vegas, Cynthia Brown of Mendham, and Marco Island, Fla., and Wendy Robinson of Old Bridge; seven granddaughters; and 10 great-grandchildren. Interment at Beth Israel Memorial Park, Woodbridge.

GARRETT. Mrs. Esther Garrett died June 29, 2010. She was 74.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Garrett lived in Livingston for 35 years before moving to Jackson two years ago. She was a partner with Things of Beauty/LenEss Beauty Supply for 50 years.

Mrs. Garrett is survived by her beloved husband, Lenny; parents, Harry and Sylvia Gross; daughters and sons-in-law, Hildy and Michael, Nancy and Eric, and Caryn and Frank; siblings, Phillip and Jerry Gross; and grandchildren, Marisa, Evan, Zach, Jess, Jake, Joey, and Jayne. Entombment at Beth Israel Cemetery Mausoleum, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston.

GOLDSTEIN. Mr. Simon H. Goldstein died June 27, 2010, at the Francis E. Parker Memorial Home. He was 91.

Born in Hartford, Conn., Simon graduated from New York University in 1941, with a degree in chemical engineering. He was president of the Mother Goldstein Wine Co. of Hartford. He moved to New Jersey in 1970, joining the Monte Carlo Wine Co., later becoming a partner in the Aires Marketing Division. He was very knowledgeable in the Raritan Bay Power Squadron, becoming a commander in 1978, donating his time and effort to boating safety. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Mr. Goldstein is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirlee Alexander; daughters and sons-in-law, Jana and Dan Schera, and Claudia and Dr. Joel Goodman; son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Dr. Laura Swerdlin; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Interment at Washington Cemetery, South Brunswick. Arrangements by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick. GORCEY. Mrs. Sophie Gorcey died July 3, 2010 at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, New Brunswick. She was 92.

Born in the Bronx to Minnie and Ben Feld, in 1938 Sophie married Leo Gorcey of Long Branch and until 2008 made her home in that city. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, and a life member of Deborah and Hadassah. She was predeceased by her parents and her husband.

Mrs. Gorcey is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Francine and Phil Weinstein of Kendall Park, Rochelle Blouin of Burlington, Vt., and Honnie and John Burkett of Long Branch; sisters, Bernice Weinstein of Long Branch and Helen Greenstein of Tamarac, Fla.; and grandchildren, Steven Weinstein of Las Vegas, Robert Weinstein of Kendall Park, and Sam Blouin of Montgomery, Vt. JACOWITZ. Mr. Burton J. Jacowitz of Old Bridge died July 2, 2010, at Saint Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 72.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Jacowitz lived there until moving to Old Bridge 42 years ago. He was an attorney for New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Group in Parsippany. He was a member of the N.Y. State Bar Association and was past president of the Brooklyn Workers Compensation Board. He was also a member of the N.J. State Board of Workers Compensation. He was a congregant of Temple Shalom in Aberdeen.

Mr. Jacowitz is survived by his wife of 50 years, Babette Jacobson Jacowitz; son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence and Danielle of Liverpool, N.Y.; daughter and son-in-law, Rabbi Beth Jacowitz Chottiner and Lee of Wheeling, W.Va.; sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Joel Bernstein of Elmhurst, Ill.; and four grandchildren. Interment at Beth Moses Cemetery, Farmingdale, N.Y. Arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick. KAHN. Mrs. Maxine Kahn died June 27, 2010 at home. She was 80.

Born and raised in the Bronx, Maxine was selflessly devoted to her family and an active member of the Martinsville community for close to 40 years. In addition, she served on the board for the local chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Association and was the proprietor of a handbag and accessories store in Somerville.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, and sister.

Maxine is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Richard S.; children, Sandra Berinstein, Valerie Kahn, Jennifer Snyder, Dana Cooper, Daphne Schechter, and Michael Kahn -- as well as their spouses; and grandchildren, Oliver Berinstein, Benjamin and Rebecca Schmierer, Spencer, Preston, and Griffin Snyder, Joshua and Samuel Cooper, Samantha and Justin Schechter, and Elise and Jamie Kahn; and brother, Frank Greenwald. Interment at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, Basking Ridge. Arrangements by Bridgewater Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

MILFORD. Mrs. Eva Lou Elizabeth Bowman Milford died July 5, 2010, at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. She was 87.

Born in Mount Airy, N.C., Eva Lou moved to New Jersey when she married her loving husband, Dr. William Milford. She was a longtime member of Temple Sharey-Tefilo Israel in South Orange. She was elected the first president of the Women's Organization, now known as the Sisterhood of Temple Sharey-Tefilo. She also established herself as a life member of B'nai B'rith South Mountain Lodge, and the International Council of Jewish Women. Her loving husband of 50 years, Dr. William Milford, died in 1994. She was also predeceased by her 14 siblings.

Eva Lou is survived by her daughters, Marsha Grouls, Shelley Ginsberg, and Patricia Milford; grandchildren, Susan Dennis, Debra Tornes, Kim Movshin, Rachel Montagna, and Marc Ginsberg; great-grandchildren, Eric, Michelle, Hannah, Allie, Emily, Ryan, Max, Maddy, Samantha, and Alex; and brother, Martin Bowman of Mount Airy, N.C. Interment at B'nai Abraham Memorial Park, Union.Arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. SHELLER. Mr. Myron Sheller died June 30, 2010, at home. He was 71.

Born and raised in Newark, Mr. Sheller graduated from Weequahic High School and Bradley University and was the owner of the Manning's Army and Navy Store, Elizabeth.

Mr. Sheller is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara (nee Klausner); daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Andrew Sinetar and Allison and Kyle Feldman; brother, Dr. Robert Sheller; and grandchildren, Jake, Jayne, Tyler, and Lila. Interment at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin. Arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. SOMLO. Mrs. Jeanette Somlo died June 30,2010. She was 85.

Born in Jersey City, Mrs. Somlo was a former resident of Colonia and Manchester. She was a legal secretary before retiring and was a member of ORT. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert. Mrs. Somlo is survived by her daughter, Barbara Horn of Hamilton; son, Paul of Greeley, Colo.; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Gloria Nyman; sister, Annette Schear; and grandchildren, Dana and Andrew Blowstein.
