THE JEWISH STATE July 2, 2010 BEIM. Mr. Irving Beim died June 25, 2010 at Overlook Hospital, Summit. He was 88. Born in Poland, Mr. Beim lived in Newark and Union before moving to Clark 15 years ago. He also maintained a residence in Fort Worth, Fla. He was a self-employed general contractor in Union for 35 years, retiring 10 years ago. He was a veteran of World War II, and a member of the Young Men's Hebrew Club and the YMHA, both of Union. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Anita (nee Levy); brother, Herman; and sister, Blanche Millinger. Mr. Beim is survived by his daughter, Harriet; son and daughter-in-law, Neil and Lynn; dear companion, Doris Kalish; grandson, Alex; and many nieces and nephews. Interment at Beth David Memorial Park, Kenilworth. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. BERNSTEIN. Mrs. Jeanette Gutman Bernstein died peacefully in her sleep after a six month struggle with lung cancer. She was 83. Born in Perth Amboy, Mrs. Bernstein lived in the Clearbrook Adult Community in Monroe for the last 31 years. She was formerly a resident of Woodbridge, where she raised her three children. She was an elementary school teacher, then principal at the Port Reading School No. 9 for many years before becoming the principal at the Woodbridge Middle School, from which she retired in 1993. She was demanding of her students and of her teachers, expecting and getting the best from everyone. She was much loved and well respected in her professional life as in her personal life. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard. Mrs. Bernstein is survived by her children, Wendy, Hank, and Robert; and grandchildren, Lauren, David, Brian, Stephen, and Bridget. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Gerity Funeral Home, Woodbridge. BROWN. Mrs. Hilda C. Brown died June 25, 2010 in the comfort of her home in Bradley Beach, where she lived since 1940. She was 97. Hilda and her late husband, Max, to whom she was married for 69 years, were active in many charitable organizations. She held many positions in the Congregation Agudath Achim Sisterhood, was a member of Hadassah, and a charter member of both Magen David Adom and Amit Women. Even as a child Hilda loved to read, most especially about history (in high school she scored 100 percent on the New York Regents Exam in history). As young as age 7 she knew that she wanted to pursue a career as a librarian. Her first professional library job was at the Brooklyn Public Library, then after meeting and marrying Max and moving to New Jersey, she worked the next 20 years as a librarian at the Bradley Beach Public Library. She enjoyed many visits to Israel, and on their last trip in 2006 in order to celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary, Hilda and Max were recognized as the oldest married couple to ever fly El Al. Hilda is survived by her sister, Shirley Gutstein of Florida; son and daughter-in-law, Allan and Magda of Surprise, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Howard Wasserman of Egg Harbor; grandchildren and their spouses, Jason and Allison Wasserman of Portland, Oreg., Eric and Christine Brown of Venice, Calif., and Marc and Fanny Wasserman of Egg Harbor; many nieces and nephews; and granddog, Kep. Mrs. Sylvia Gersten (nee Siegel) died June 15, 2010, at Cranford Health and Extended Care Center. She was 88. Born in Minneapolis, Mrs. Gersten lived in Newark, Roselle Park, and Kenilworth. She was a crossing guard for the Borough of Kenilworth for 14 years before retiring in 1989, and a member of the Newark Chapter of B'nai B'rith Women. She was predeceased by her husband, Larry, and her brothers, Paul and Cliff Siegel. Mrs. Gerstein is survived by her daughter, Lois Harrison; sons, Elliot and Steven; sisters, Edith Waxman and Celia Wallach; grandchildren, Rebecca Thomas, Meredith Gersten, Brad Harrison, and Scott Harrison; and great-grandchildren, Hunter Thomas, Austin Harrison, and Matthew and Ryan Harrison. Interment at Beth David Memorial Park, Kenilworth. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. LEVINE. Mr. Julius "Jules" Levine died June 25, 2010, at Jersey Shore Medical Center. He was 96. Mr. Levine was born in New York City and lived there for many years before moving to Woodbridge over 50 years ago. He recently moved to Tinton Falls. Mr. Levine was a former member of Congregation Adath Israel and The Club at Woodbridge, where he played tennis. He was a salesman in the garment industry. Mr. Levine is survived by his wife of 75 years, Ann (nee Roman); his three sons, Bernard and his wife, Michelle, of Edison, Allen and his wife, Marilyn, of South Plainfield, and Robert and his wife, Barbara, of San Francisco; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Louis Carl Peterson died June 15, 2010, at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center, Burlington, Mass. He was 63. Born and raised in Lakewood, Mr. Peterson completed the Lakewood public schools, and attended the prestigious Julliard School of Music for one year. He played the drums and percussions, won many awards. He was a great musician. He spent his last 40 years in the Boston area. His brother, Joel, died in 1977. Mr. Peterson is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Susan of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; nephews, Daniel, David, Scott, and Eric Peterson, and Ryan and Erik Duchon; and great-nieces and nephews, Lindsey, Rachel, Josh, Jake, Marlee, and Juliana Peterson. Mr. Robert Rubenstein died June 21, 2010 at the Francis E. Parker Home, New Brunswick. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Rubenstein had been a resident of Highland Park and Edison before moving to New Brunswick 10 years ago. He owned and operated Clark Auto Parts, Clark, for more than 25 years before retiring some 20 years ago. An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 47th Infantry Division. He was a past president of the N.J. Automotive Association, and had been a volunteer at the JFK Medical Center Pharmacy and the Parker Home for many years. He was also a long time member of the Highland Park Conservative Temple /Congregation Anshe Emeth, Highland Park, and the temple's Choir. Along with Sr. Ann of the Parker Home, he started a Passover service program at the facility. He had a passion for reading, crossword puzzles, cooking, and fixing things. He was especially fond of children and animals, particularly dogs. For many years he served as a scout master for the Boy Scouts of America in Highland Park. He was predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Rose; first wife, Ann; daughter, Mae; and brothers, Sol and Abe. Mr. Rubenstein is survived by his second wife, Jean Rosen Rubenstein; son, Elihu of East Brunswick; daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Bob Schiff of East Hampton, N.Y., and Judy and Dr. Gary Kalan of Greenwich, Conn.; and grandchildren, Jason, Aaron, and Scott Rubenstein, and Geoffrey and Jackie Kalan. Interment at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, lselin. Arrangements by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick. SCHLESINGER. Mrs. Emma B. Schlesinger died June 26, 2010 at home. She was 87. Born in Philadelphia, Emma lived in Maplewood, Barnegat, and for the last three and a half years in Jackson. Always active in religious and civic affairs, she was a member and Sisterhood president at Temple B'nai Israel, Irvington. She took care of the Kiddush and Oneg Shabbat, and was known as a great cook. She visited sick members when called upon by the rabbi, and was available for elderly women who needed help. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mrs. Schlesinger is survived by her college sweetheart and beloved husband of 60 years, Leonard; son, Ted; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Michael Sherman of New York City; grandchildren, Laura and Avi Fisher, Jonathan Sherman, and Joshua and Andrea Sherman; and great-grandson, Joseph. Interment at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin. Arrangements by Belkoff-Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Lakewood.
