THE JEWISH STATE April 9, 2010 BLAINE. Mrs. Selma Ann Blaine died March 23, 2010, at Cranbury Care Center. She was 94. Mrs. Blaine married Dr. Harold S. Blaine in 1936 and lived in Highland Park, and West Palm Beach, Fla. She graduated from the "State" University at New Paltz, N.Y. in 1934, where she was secretary of the Pi Sigma Lamda sorority, and graduated from Newark State College at Union in 1965. A director and teacher for 26 years at the Highland Park Temple Nursery School, she was a volunteer teacher at the Forest Hill Elementary School and a literacy teacher in West Palm Beach. She was active in many organizations, Amity Link #20, Order of the Golden Chain, secretary of Beth Shalom Temple Sisterhood, in Lake Worth, Fla., treasurer of Tel-Aviv B'nai B'rith lodge #5354, Lake Worth, Fla., ORT, Hadassah, Brandeis and Deborah. Mrs. Blaine is survived by her children, Dr. Jack D. Blaine of Potomac, Md., and Brenda Rooberg of Monroe; five grandsons; and nine great-grandchildren. Interment at Washington Cemetery, Deans. Mrs. Shirley Davis died March 27, 2010. She was 76. Born in New York to the late Morris and Helen Greenberg, Shirley graduated from Lakewood High School in 1951 and raised three beloved daughters. Great with people, she was a realtor, travel agent, and volunteer. She was a very active member of Temple Beth Am in Lakewood. She appreciated the fine arts and was actively involved in the Arts and Culture Group of Fairways, in Lakewood. She loved discussing politics and enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. She was incredibly devoted to her family and will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. She was predeceased by her husband, Morgan. She was also predeceased by her grandchildren, Dana in 1991, and Ian in 2006. Shirley is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and Glenn Hirsch of Atlanta, Laurie and James Beaty of Huntersville, N.C., and Beth and Brad Besner of Davie, Fla.; brother, Seymour Greenberg of Lakewood; niece, Sharon Grechberg; grandchildren, Jill and her husband Shahak, Neil, Jerry, Seth, Sara, Kevin, Sean, Grant, and Noah; and great-grandsons, Benji and Evan. Lake Vista Circle, Davie, Fla., 33328. JANSON. Mr. Kurt Bernard Janson died March 22, 2010 at Community Medical Service in Toms River. He was 97. Born in Berlin, Mr. Janson lived in Newark, then settled in Toms River in 1979. He was a member of Temple Emunath Israel in East Orange. He served in the Army during World War II and was TEC5. Kurt and his wife, Anita, owned and operated a children's clothing store in Newark, Anita's Shop, for 30 years until their retirement. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Anita (nee Rosenzweig). Mr. Janson is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John Martin and Diane of Bridgewater; daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline Susan and Marc Burge of Parsippany; grandchildren, Rachel, Micah and his wife, Corrie, Michael and his wife, Katie, and Melissa; and great-grandson, Aidan Jacob. Dr. Marvin Kurland died March 23, 2010 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. He was 71. Born in the Bronx, Dr. Kurland was a resident of East Brunswick. He was professor of electrical and computer engineering for more than 20 years at the College of New Jersey, Ewing. He was a member of the Monroe Township Jewish Center, a volunteer for the Sharing Network for organ donation awareness, and a volunteer for St. Barnabas Hospital as a patient representative for transplantation. He was an avid golfer and former member of Glenwood Country Club and "The Bagels." Dr. Kurland is survived by his wife of 48 years, Cecelia Schuster Kurland of East Brunswick; son and daughter-in-law, Seth and Dana of Livingston; daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Steve Najarro of Azusa, Calif.; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Herbert Aschkenasy of Salem, Ore.; and grandchildren, Jake and Brett Kurland, and Joseph and Eric Najarro. Mrs. Helen Kusnierz died March 24, 2010, at the St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livington. She was 80. Born in Poland, Mrs. Kusnierz, a Holocaust survivor, lived in Elizabeth before moving to Short Hills. She and her husband, Meyer, owned the New York Department Store in Elizabeth for more than 40 years before retiring. She had been involved in numerous meetings of Holocaust survivors in the New Jersey, New York, and Washington, D.C., areas. Mrs. Kusnierz is survived by her husband, Meyer; sons, James and Earl; and grandchildren, Burke, Zoe, Amanda, Kayla, and Harrison. Interment at Cedar Park Cemetery, Paramus. Arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman, Livingston. NITKIN. Mrs. Phyllis Nitkin died March 31, 2010 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. She was 82. Born in Brooklyn to Russian immigrant parents, Milton and Sonia Fraidkin, Phyllis lived in Springfield for 17 years before moving to Monroe 24 years ago. Prior to retiring, she was a secretary for Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. An avid reader and knitter, her interests included a good trip to the salon, a trip to the mall, vacationing in the islands, Atlantic City, dancing, and a good party. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her family. Mrs. Nitkin is survived by her husband of 52 years, Paul; son, Andrew of Berkeley Heights; daughters and sons-in-law, Amy and John Czajkowski of Freehold, and Ilene and Gary Rosenzweig of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; brother, Howard Fraidkin of Manhattan; and grandchildren, Mark, Rachel, Jason, Kyle, and Sophia. Born Dec. 27, 1925 to Minnie and Alex Sandler in Perth Amboy, Sam was the youngest of four children. Sam grew up in Perth Amboy. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific. After the war, he went to University of Miami. After college, he met his wife, Rose and they were married in 1952. He worked for the John Hancock Insurance Co. for 36 years. He loved playing racquetball and watching sports on TV. He attended many sporting events in his early years. He and his wife have been members of Highland Park Conservative Temple for more than 50 years. He was predeceased by his siblings, Florence, Norman, and Mitchell. Mr. Sandler is survived by his wife, Rose; sons and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jeffrey and Roni of Weston, Conn., and Richard of Edison; daughter and son-in-law, Jodi Sandler Ogen and Steve Ogen of East Brunswick; and grandchildren, Laura, Jason, Alissa, Amanda, and Jessica. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Memorial donations may be made to the Highland Park Conservative Temple.
