THE JEWISH STATE April 2, 2010 BLAINE. Mrs. Selma Ann Blaine died March 23, 2010, at Cranbury Care Center. She was 94. Mrs. Blaine married Dr. Harold S. Blaine in 1936 and lived in Highland Park and West Palm Beach, Fla. She graduated from the "State" University at New Paltz , N.Y., in 1934, where she was secretary of the Pi Sigma Lamda Sorority and graduated from the Newark State College at Union in 1965. A director and teacher for 26 years at the Highland Park Temple Nursery School, she was a volunteer teacher at the Forest Hill Elementary School and a literacy teacher in West Palm Beach, Fla. She was active in many organizations, Amity Link #20, Order of the Golden Chain, secretary of Beth Shalom Temple Sisterhood, in Lake Worth,Fla., treasurer of Tel Aviv B'nai B'rith lodge #5354, Lake Worth, Fla., ORT, Hadassah, Brandeis and Deborah. Mrs. Blaine is survived by her son, Dr. Jack D. of Potomac, Md.; daughter, Brenda Rooberg of Monroe; five; and nine great-grandchildren. Interment at Washington Cemetery, Deans. FRIEDMAN. Mrs. Pearl Friedman died March 24, 2010, at Care One at King James, Atlantic Highlands. She was 79. Born in the Bronx, Mrs. Friedman was a microfiche clerk for the Central Jersey Bank and Trust Company, Freehold. She was a member of the National Council of Jewish Women. Her husband, Samuel S. Friedman, died in 2001. She was also predeceased by a brother, Lawrence Honig. Mrs. Friedman is survived by her beloved daughter, Barbara A. Friedman of Freehold and Manhattan; sister, Rhoda Cohen; and nephews, Charles and Jeffrey. Arrangements by Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold. Memorial donations may be made to S.P.C.A. of Monmouth County. JANSON. Mr. Kurt Bernard Janson died March 22, 2010 at Community Medical Service in Toms River. He was 97. Born in Berlin, Mr. Janson lived in Newark, then settled in Toms River in 1979. He was a member of Temple Emunath Israel in East Orange. He served in the Army during World War II and was TEC5. Kurt and his wife, Anita, owned and operated a children's clothing store in Newark, Anita's Shop, for 30 years until their retirement. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Anita (nee Rosenzweig). Mr. Janson is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John Martin and Diane of Bridgewater; daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline Susan and Marc Burge of Parsippany; grandchildren, Rachel, Micah and his wife, Corrie, Michael and his wife, Katie, and Melissa; and great-grandson, Aidan Jacob. Mrs. Evelyn (Mentcher) Kozatch, 84, of Iselin died March 23, 2010, at home in Iselin. She was 84. Born in Newark and raised in Carteret, Mrs. Kozatch lived in Clark for many years before moving to Iselin six years ago. She was a member of Temple Beth Or in Clark. Her husband, George Kozatch, died in 1999. Mrs. Kozatch is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Myra and Jeff Pelz, and Sherri and Ralph Austin; son and daughter-in-law, David Kozatch and Mary Ellen Bartley; five grandchildren; and sisters, Harriet Brandwein and Shirley Lipton. Dr. Marvin Kurland died March 23, 2010 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. He was 71. Born in the Bronx, Dr. Kurland was a resident of East Brunswick. He was professor of electrical and computer engineering for more than 20 years at the College of New Jersey, Ewing. He was a member of the Monroe Township Jewish Center, a volunteer for the Sharing Network for organ donation awareness, and a volunteer for St. Barnabas Hospital as a patient representative for transplantation. He was an avid golfer and former member of Glenwood Country Club and "The Bagels." Dr. Kurland is survived by his wife of 48 years, Cecelia Schuster Kurland of East Brunswick; son and daughter-in-law, Seth and Dana of Livingston; daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Steve Najarro of Azusa, Calif.; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Herbert Aschkenasy of Salem, Ore.; and grandchildren, Jake and Brett Kurland, and Joseph and Eric Najarro. Mrs. Helen Kusnierz died March 24, 2010 at the St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston. She was 80. Born in Poland, Mrs. Kusnierz, a Holocaust survivor, lived in Elizabeth before moving to Short Hills. She and her husband, Meyer, owned the New York Department Store in Elizabeth for more than 40 years before retiring. She had been involved in numerous meetings of Holocaust survivors in the New Jersey, New York and Washington, D.C., areas. Mrs. Kusnierz is survived by her husband, Meyer; sons, James and Earl; and grandchildren, Burke, Zoe, Amanda, Kayla, and Harrison. Interment at Cedar Park Cemetery, Paramus. Arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman, Livingston. LIGHT. Mrs. Erville (Silverstein) Light died March 25, 2010, at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx. She was 77. Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Light lived in Piscataway before moving to Highland Park 49 years ago. She received her bachelor's degree in education from Brooklyn College and taught elementary and high school for several years in the N.Y. school system. She also worked for years as a salesperson for Gimbel's Dept. Store, N.Y., and enjoyed doing "extra" work in movies and television. Her most notable role was in the movie, "Wall Street." A well-known and active member of the Highland Park senior community, she loved life and lived it to the fullest. She enjoyed shopping, acting, and long conversations on politics. She was active in Governor Jon Corzine's campaigns. Her beloved husband, Dr. Eugene Light, died in 1996. Mrs. Light is survived by her son, Dr. Robert Bradley Light of Forrest Hills, N.Y.; daughter and son-in-law, Laurel Iris Light and Adam Nazimowicz of Merrick, N.Y.; and granddaughter, Erica Nazimowicz. Mrs. Phyllis Ruth Marx died March 22, 2010, at home in Beachwood, Ohio. She was 90. Mrs. Marx was predeceased by her husband, Edwin, in 1986; and her sister, Jeanette Keidan. She is survived by her son, Murray, of Deal Park; daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and Phil Fink of Beachwood, Ohio; sisters and brother-in-law, Betty and Nate Siegal of Columbus, Ohio, and Sally Glascom of Pa.; and grandchildren, Shawn M. Fink and his wife Liz, and Elise Resnick and her husband Jaime. Interment at Temple Beth El Cemetery, Neptune. Arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association. SANDLER. Mr. Sam Sandler died March 24, 2010, at home. He was 84. Born to Minnie and Alex Sandler in Perth Amboy, Sam was the youngest of four children, Florence, Norman and Mitchell, who are all deceased. He grew up in Perth Amboy. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific. After the war, he went to University of Miami. After college, he met his wife, Rose, and they were married in 1952. He worked for the John Hancock Insurance Co. for 36 years. He loved playing racquetball and watching sports on TV. He attended many sporting events in his early years. He and his wife have been members of Highland Park Conservative Temple for more than 50 years. Mr. Sandler is survived by his wife, Rose; sons and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jeffrey and Roni of Weston, Conn., and Richard of Edison; daughter and son-in-law, Jodi Sandler Ogen and Steve Ogen of East Brunswick; and grandchildren, Laura, Jason, Alissa, Amanda, and Jessica. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Memorial donations may be made to the Highland Park Conservative Temple.
